Speaking of the Diary of St. Faustina, Fr. Jesus makes it very clear that I am giving you three ways to live mercy: words, deeds, and prayer.
Faustina writes that Jesus told her:. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it. I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbor: the first- by deed, the second — by word, the third — by prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy, and it is an unquestionable proof of love for Me. In Matthew , Jesus says "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. This takes some patience - because we all have our own quirky behaviors!
The truth is, this kind of mercy will take you a long way in marriage. In Luke 10 , Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan to make a point that helping the hurting around you is the meaning of mercy. Maybe this week God will put someone in your path who has a physical, emotional or financial need and is unable to help themselves in this matter.
Will you extend mercy? Or will you rush around them? He looks at the bitter, drunk, angry man and sees not only the physical misery of dependence on alcohol, but also the emotional pain from a history or rejection and the spiritual hunger for freedom from sin. He views woman who is constantly demeaning others as the one who has heard hurtful words since being a young child, who never experienced the loving relationship that would teach her kindness toward others, whose broken heart tries to protect itself by shutting others out.
Mercy offers forgiveness. Forgiveness might not even mean reconciliation, particularly if the offender is unwilling to admit to being in the wrong. Rather, forgiveness on our part is the process of replacing hurt and resentment with compassion.
We receive mercy in the freedom from the chains of bitterness, the healing that can only come when we let go of our anger. We may not know the exact needs or internal struggles faced by those around us, yet a habit of showing acts of kindness, saying encouraging words, or offering a listening ear can impact lives.

To show grace means to give undeserved kindness to anyone. It can be a gift, blessing, or showing favor. There is no sense that someone is in a sort of bad state, necessarily.
In the biblical texts there is a sense of God taking imitative to reach out and lean towards you. His love and desire for our good, that leads him to mercifully bind up our wounds and heal our sin. Showing mercy means turning our anger at sin away from the sinner and towards the wrongdoing. Sin hurts. It is loving to point out sin, to explain why it is wrong, and what the consequences are. Scripture tells us to gently confront those who are sinning. When can gently correct our children by helping them to see consequences without condemnation.
When appropriate, we can show mercy by taking the cost upon ourselves, not demanding anything of the other person whether payment or payback. This is what Jesus did for us. God has made mercy His catalyst for repentance. It is mercy that leads a sinner to repentance Romans The natural consequence is to allow them to go without lunch. Showing mercy also means having compassion for the suffering of another. Another way to to show mercy is to clean up a mess that they made. Doing this is showing mercy in taking on the consequences of something your child has done.
In life, God does allow us to face the natural consequences of our mistakes. He does leave our messes for us to clean up. But he also shows us mercy.
