The fleet returns triumphantly on February 22, , having been enthusiastically welcomed at many ports and underscoring America's growing naval strength. The voyage would serve as Roosevelt's proudest accomplishment while in office.

On December 16, , President Theodore Roosevelt assembled the entire class of sixteen American battleships in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and launched them on a training cruise around the world.

Roosevelt scheduled the fleet to return to Hampton Roads on February 22, , ten days before he left office. The President intended the voyage to be the glorious capstone to his administration's accomplishments.

As President, Roosevelt had built the U. Navy into one of the largest in the world, by convincing Congress to add battleships to the fleet and increase the number of enlisted men. He had many reasons for sending the fleet on a worldwide tour.

Roosevelt wanted to allow the Navy to gain the experience of an international tour and to draw attention to his naval program. He hoped the impressive show of naval strength and prowess would rally congressional support. He also wanted to impress other countries around the world with U. American relations with Japan had soured greatly in after the San Francisco public school board voted to segregate Japanese immigrant children; at the same time, Californian politicians lobbied for Washington to restrict Japanese entry into the country.

Roosevelt hoped the Great White Fleet's arrival in Japan would signify his desire for continued friendly relations, and yet he also sought to remind the Japanese of America's ascendant naval might. Japanese crowds cheered the fleet upon its arrival in Tokyo Harbor. The Great White Fleet also announced to the world the growing global reach of American military power, especially its new and modern navy. In this way, Roosevelt used the fleet to represent what he saw as America's arrival as a great nation on the world stage.

A devotee of naval theorist Alfred Thayer Mahan, who equated international power with naval might, Roosevelt supported new battleship construction, the modernization of ship armaments, and the adoption of new marksmanship techniques. In doing so, he greatly expanded the reach of American power-a process his predecessor, President William McKinley, began in earnest. Roosevelt used the American Antiquities Act of to create 18 national monuments during his presidency.

The Grand Canyon became a national park in Roosevelt was the nation's first conservationist President. Everywhere he went, he preached the need to preserve woodlands and mountain ranges as places of refuge and retreat.

He used his presidential authority to issue executive orders to create new national forests, increasing the amount of protected land from 42 million acres to million acres. Along with the 18 national monuments, the President also created 5 national parks and 51 wildlife refuges during his tenure.

Chief Forester Gifford Pinchot heavily influenced President Roosevelt and encouraged him to make conservation a major portion of his political agenda.

Pinchot, the nation's first professional forester, and Roosevelt, an avid outdoorsman, teamed up during Roosevelt's second term to push their shared progressive vision for wilderness conservation.

Conservation to these progressives, however, did not mean simply placing land off limits to development and industry. Pinchot believed that the science of forestry could make forests more productive and valuable to industry; scientific expertise could improve upon nature. Like Roosevelt, Pinchot also believed that conservation was at its core an issue of equality of opportunity, as conservation allowed for public access to land that would otherwise wastefully bring profit to a few.

The pair wanted all Americans to be able to use parklands. Pinchot was a strong advocate for more federal power to protect wilderness in the United States, particularly in the West. With his prodding, President Roosevelt secured the Transfer Act in , which shifted the responsibility of managing federal forests from the Department of the Interior to the Department of Agriculture and the Division of Forestry, later remained the Forest Service.

As head of the Forest Service, Pinchot staffed it with scientists, not bureaucrats, and Pinchot and his team added millions of acres of western land to federal holdings. During the early s, conservation became a new and increasingly popular agenda for the federal government, due to President Roosevelt's energetic promotion of the issue.

The United States and Japan reach an agreement on the restriction of Japanese immigration. The Japanese government agrees not to issue any more visas permitting Japanese laborers to emigrate to the United States. At the White House, the first Conference of Governors meets to discuss the problems of conservation.

Republicans were far from united in their support for Taft; party chairman Henry Cabot Lodge speaks in praise of President Roosevelt, touching off a forty-five minute demonstration among the delegates. But his complex legacy includes not just his achievements as a progressive reformer and conservationist who regulated big business and established the national park system. Like many of his time, he also believed firmly in the existence of a racial hierarchy topped by those of white Anglo-Saxon descent, a belief that shaped his attitudes—and policies—on race relations, land rights and American imperialism.

Upon graduating from Harvard College in , Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway Lee and entered Columbia University Law School, though he dropped out after only one year to enter public service. He was elected to the New York State Assembly at the age of 23 and served two terms Both his wife and mother died on the same day in , and the grieving Roosevelt spent the next two years on a ranch he owned in the Badlands of the Dakota Territory, where he hunted big game, drove cattle and worked as a frontier sheriff.

In , Roosevelt ran unsuccessfully for mayor of New York City. Upon the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in , Roosevelt left his post as naval secretary to become colonel of the First U. The Republican political machine in New York threw their considerable support behind the returning war hero, helping Roosevelt defeat a popular Democratic candidate to win the governorship. Once elected, Roosevelt displayed his characteristic independence and unwillingness to buckle to the pressure of party bosses.

Roosevelt campaigned vigorously for McKinley, traveling by train for more than 21, miles to speak in 24 states, and McKinley and Roosevelt won in a landslide over Democrats William Jennings Bryan and Adlai E. McKinley died eight days later, and Roosevelt was sworn in as the 26th president. From the time of his First Annual Message to Congress in December , Roosevelt expressed the progressive belief that government should mediate between conflicting forces including capital and labor, isolationism and expansionism and conservation and development in order to stabilize American society.

In , his government brought a successful suit under the previously ineffective Sherman Antitrust Act against the Northern Securities Company, a railroad combination formed by James J. Hill, E. Harriman and J. That same year, he intervened in a prolonged coal strike in Pennsylvania , using a combination of negotiation tactics to halt the strike and gain a modest pay increase for the miners.

Roosevelt also used his executive power to further his passion for conservationism. In June , the National Reclamation Act dedicated to large-scale irrigation projects in the American West became the first major legislative achievement of his presidency. In addition, Roosevelt set aside almost million acres—almost five times as much land as all his predecessors combined—for national forests, reserves and wildlife refuges.

As part of that process, he favored the removal of many Native Americans from their ancestral territories, including approximately 86 million acres of tribal land transferred to the national forest system. He was the first president to win reelection after gaining the White House due to the death of his predecessor. Like McKinley, Roosevelt sought to bring the United States out of its isolationism and fulfill its responsibility as a world power.

Roosevelt followed this big-stick policy most conspicuously in his dealings in Latin America. In , he helped Panama secede from Colombia in order to facilitate the beginning of construction on the Panama Canal , which he later claimed as his greatest accomplishment as president.

While he groomed them to perform alongside himself and his wife, voice actors played David and Ricky Eric. Although these were skilled voice actors, it was important to keep things in the family for Ozzie and Harriet, however, so when David was 12 and Ricky was eight they began performing alongside their parents.

It was thanks to Bing Crosby, interestingly enough, that Ozzie was convinced his boys were ready to join their parents. For one, it featured the original and prototypical American family that has been redone over and over again in American TV. At this time, the rules, known as the Hays Code, the film industry imposed on itself normally demanded that one of them should have had a foot firmly planted on the ground.

This family-friendly image resonated so much with fans that when Ricky performed a Rolling Stones song in , he was booed off stage by his horrified fans, who came to see him perform his oldies. Ricky crossed over into movies as well. Around this time he started dating Kristin Harmon, the daughter of football legend Tom Harmon.

They married a couple of years later; she was pregnant at the time, which was kept secret.

If the artichokes have little thorns on the ends of their leaves, take kitchen scissors and cut off the tips. This step is mostly for aesthetics as the thorns soften with cooking and pose no threat to the person eating the artichoke. But snipping them off will make the artichokes easier to handle. A serrated bread knife works great for this. Pull off any smaller leaves towards the base and on the stem. Cut off excess stem, leaving up to an inch on the artichoke.

The stems can be more bitter than the rest of the artichoke, but some people like to eat them. The inner cores of the stems taste like the heart. Alternatively, you can leave the whole long stem on the artichoke, just cut off the very end of the stem, and peel the tough outside layer of the stem with a vegetable peeler.

Rinse the artichokes in running cold water. While you rinse them, open up the leaves a little so that the water gets inside more easily. This is where it helps to have cut off the thorny tips, it makes the artichoke easier to open without getting poked!

In a large pot, put a couple inches of water, the garlic, a slice of lemon, and a bay leaf this adds wonderful flavor to the artichokes. Insert a steaming basket. Place artichokes on top of the steaming basket. Cover the pot. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to simmer. Cook for 25 to 35 minutes or longer, until the outer leaves can easily be pulled off.

Note: artichokes can also be cooked in a pressure cooker about minutes at high pressure. Cooking time depends on how large the artichokes are. The larger, the longer they take to cook. Artichokes may be eaten cold or hot, but I think they are much better hot. They are served with a dip, either melted butter or mayonnaise. My favorite dip is mayo with a little bit of balsamic vinegar mixed in. Pull off the outer leaves, one at a time.

Dip the white fleshy end in melted butter, a vinaigrette, or sauce. Tightly grip the other end of the petal. Place in mouth, dip side down, and pull through teeth to remove soft, pulpy, delicious portion of the petal. Why dip-side down? Your tongue is where most of your taste buds are, so you'll get a fuller flavor if you strip the leaves that way. Discard remaining petal. Continue until all of the petals are removed. When you get to the tender inner leaves with the purple tips, you can remove them all at once.

Dip and eat just the light colored parts of these leaves. With a knife or spoon, scrape out and discard the inedible fuzzy part called the "choke" covering the artichoke heart.

That spring, I passed off the artichoke prep to my mom, who happened to be visiting thanks, Mom! First, make sure you have the right equipment. Artichokes start to brown as soon as you cut them. I also recommend using a stainless steel knife instead of a carbon-steel one, which can increase browning. Start by preparing the stem.

Peel off any tough, small petals on the artichoke stem. Then, use your knife to trim the end of the stem. You only need to cut off a little bit! The stem is completely edible, and it has a wonderful meaty texture. After you trim the stem, gently score it to help it cook more quickly. Next, grab your peeler. Use it to trim away the tough outer skin of the artichoke stem.

Then, rub the peeled sides of the stem with lemon juice. Next, prepare the artichoke leaves. At this point, your artichoke will have a flat top with a few rows of pointy leaves around the sides. Fun fact: artichokes are the flower buds of a member of the thistle family. From those prickly leaves, you can tell! It's easy to cook an artichoke - and worth every second you spend doing it.

Here's how to choose, cook, and eat artichokes! Print Pin Rate. Yield: 1. Ingredients Fresh artichokes choose 'chokes that are brightly colored, sport tightly closed leaves, and feel a little heavy for their size Lemon slice Garlic clove Bay leaf.

Instructions With a pair of kitchen scissors, snip off the tips of the artichoke leaves. They're pokey, and that's no fun. You can check for doneness by inserting the tip of a knife into the bottom if it goes in with only a little resistance they're done or by pulling off a tester leave it should come off easily.

Back to Caring, carers and long-term conditions. If you're off work sick for 7 days or less, your employer should not ask for medical evidence that you've been ill. Instead they can ask you to confirm that you've been ill. You can do this by filling in a form yourself when you return to work. This is called self-certification. If you're off work sick for more than 7 days, your employer will usually ask for a fit note or Statement of Fitness for Work from a GP or hospital doctor.

Where the doctor says the employee might be fit for work, they can give details of what level of work they consider the person is able to do. For example, a factory employee with a back injury might be able to come back to work to do light tasks, but would not be able to do any heavy lifting. The doctor might suggest in the fit note ways the employer can help their employee get back to work.

For example:. The employer should carefully consider any fit note recommendations as they can help the person get back to work quicker.

There is no need to get another fit note. Some workplaces might have an occupational health scheme or employee assistance programme EAP to help the return to work process. If the employee has a disability, by law the employer must consider making reasonable adjustments to help them return to work and carry out their job.

For example to:. If the employee does not wish the employer to see their medical information, the employer will have to make a decision based on what they know and are told by the employee. Any information the employer does get about an employee must be stored and kept confidential.

Only appropriate senior and involved members of staff should have access to the information. Please book a routine appointment; urgent appointments are only provided for genuine medical emergencies and not for the purpose of certificates.

In either case there are rules governing the issue of sick certificates and the GP may not be able to supply one, depending on the information you provide. If you are under the care of a hospital, your certificate may be issued by the hospital, rather than by the practice. There is usually no charge for providing a fit note if you are off sick for more than seven days. Some employers may request a fit note e. This is a private non-NHS medical certificate.

If your certificate runs out, but you are still sick, you will need to consult the doctor again before you can get a further certificate. Fit certificates can be back-dated so it is not necessary to make an emergency appointment to renew your certifiate. If you attend an emergency appointment for the purpose of getting a medical certificate you will be asked to rebook.

The Extended Access Service make more appointments with GPs available in Lewisham, making it easier for you to get an appointment at a time that suits you, including evenings and weekends. If you need a fit note, contact your GP surgery. Or if you are getting hospital treatment, ask for one from your hospital doctor. If they deem that you are "not fit for work" they will write a note to that effect that you can present to your employer. They may think that you "may be fit for work taking into account the following advice", under which circumstances they would layout circumstances or changes to your usual working routine that would allow you to perform your job - or some variation of it.

If your employer is unable to accommodate these conditions, the note is considered to say "unfit for work".

But, as we always say, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. In Focht et. They used the same duct tape you probably have in your home right now and instructed patients to leave it on for 6 days at a time, for up to two months.

To this they compared traditional cryotherapy of warts, wherein liquid nitrogen was applied to a wart using a Q-Tip for seconds, every weeks, for a maximum of 6 applications. So that solves it right?

Duct tape works. There have been some more, and less, valid criticisms levied at this study. In the more valid category, there are concerns about sample sizes. There are also valuable concerns about the ages of the participants.

With this in mind, the seconds that the Focht et. In , de Haen attempted a similar study, using school children from the Netherlands. Be aware, do this in a well ventilated area, because the acid stinks. Cover the wart with duct tape after you put the medicine on the wart and the medicine has dried. Make sure you don't get any of this medicine near the eyes or the mouth.

The medicine will turn the top of the wart into dead skin and it will all turn white. Once or twice a week, remove the dead wart material by rubbing the dead skin off with a pumice stone or washcloth.

The dead wart will be softer and easier to remove if you soak the area first in warm water for 10 minutes. Warts are contagious but mainly to the child that has the warts. They aren't very contagious to other people. If your child chews or sucks on the wart, cover the area with duct tape and change it as often as necessary. Encourage your child to give up this habit, because chewing on the warts can cause warts on the lips and or the face. If that happens, your child needs a trip to a dermatologist.

Instead, covering a wart with duct tape prevents the virus from spreading further by stopping the wart from contacting other parts of your skin. Duct tape is made of three layers: a strong, stretchy layer that resembles a fabric; a mesh layer; and an adhesive chemical layer. The combination of strength in the upper layers and chemical adhesion in the bottom layer might be a clue to what makes duct tape work to treat warts. The duct tape adheres to the top layer of the wart. When you tear the tape off, a layer of the wart will often come off with it.

This may be less painful than remedies like freezing. Additionally, it uses fewer chemicals than over-the-counter oral treatments and is more cost-effective than laser treatment. There is research that seems to demonstrate that duct tape works better for wart treatment than other methods, such as freezing. One study claims that duct tape is 80 percent effective for speeding up the rate at which warts go away.

But almost every study that looked into the science of this treatment has had a relatively small sample size. Plantar warts , which occur on your heels or other parts of your feet, may be more resistant to these treatments because the layers of skin on your feet tend to be more difficult to remove. If you have genital warts , you should be examined by a doctor. I Accept Show Purposes. Table of Contents View All.

Store the sauerkraut in a sealed container with a tight-fitting lid. Store commercially sold sauerkraut in the jar it came in, making sure to use it once opened within a couple of weeks.

How sauerkraut is stored in the refrigerator affects the quality. Make sure the sauerkraut in a jar is fully immersed in the brine to prevent it from becoming oxidized because of air exposure. Push the sauerkraut below the brine level before storing it and use a clean utensil to do so each time.

Metal that is exposed to sauerkraut can rust, so avoid storing the food in a jar with a metal lid. Spoilage in fermented sauerkraut is rare when properly stored in the refrigerator. The most common change is darkened sauerkraut because of air exposure and storing it above the brine.

However, freezing can cause it to lose some of the nutrients because of extreme temperatures link. How long does freezer sauerkraut last? Because of the extreme temperatures, however, some of the nutrients may be lost. The taste, color, and texture of your sauerkraut remain the same throughout the storage period.

Things you will need: Jars or freezer bags Vacuum sealer Jar lifter optional Method: 1. Scoop your sauerkraut into jars or freezer bags. If you are using bags, seal the bag using a vacuum sealer to eliminate any air inside the bag. Set your freezer at Basement or DIY Cellar Although controversial, this method of storing sauerkraut has actually been found to be effective especially for people without refrigerators.

Many basements are dug into the earth where temperatures are around 53 degrees F and below link. Properly fermented it can last for a considerable amount of time in this temperature. The cooler your basement is the better. How long does it last in the basement or DIY Cellar? Properly fermented it can be stored in the basement, backyard or DIY Cellar for months without going bad.

Your sauerkraut will, however, be softer and sourer when stored this way as months go by. Dig a sizeable hole in your basement or backyard to accommodate the number of jars you want to store. Maintain the temperature at 53 degrees F or lower. Cover with an airtight lid put the can inside the hole and cover the hole with hay or grass. Frequently monitor the temperatures to ensure they are 53 degrees F or lower. Canning Canning is the most effective way of storing and preserving your sauerkraut.

Awesome article! By the way, if I eat all the kimchi out of the jar, can I then put more vegetables into the jar and re-pickle them? Also, what books would you recommend on making kimchi or fermentation in general? Hi Billy — This is not recommended for these reasons: 1 Probiotics tire and die off after a while. Using the brine means using micro-organisms that are on the down slope of their lives. All of those organisms contribute different flavor notes. So to get a symphony of flavor in the end product, always start with fresh produce and let the ferment progress at its own pace.

I have an unopened jar of recently purchased sauerkraut. Fridge died, but kraut got moved to neighbours fridge while still fairly chilled. Got fridge fixed and brought kraut back. Hi Sally — Sounds like that fridge is doing you no favors! If the kraut was only out of refrigeration for hours, then it should be fine to eat. But the added heat might have restarted a bit of second fermentation, which can change its texture and flavor a bit.

Hope this helps! But it should probably be good for about a month or so if kept in the refrigerator. There is no expiration date on the container of sauerkraut that I bought from Costco. But as for how long it stays fresh unopened, it is the same as if it were opened — about a month or two after the sell-by date. One of the comments says the hours out of the fridge unopened is okay.

Too much? Hi Sami — The kraut should be fine. Love the Wildbrine Organic Sauerkraut!! Never had it before, saw it at Costco, and tried it. Plan to have it on 4th of July. Still good? Hi Connie — Welcome to Team wildbrine and thank you for your kind words! However, if you want to store it for a longer period of time then you need to set the temperature of your freezer into 36 degrees. On the other hand, sauerkraut that is vinegar-based will also last for months, whereas, products that are made with meat juices or fats, as well as salt brine, will spoil more rapidly.

Sauerkraut that is not refrigerated must be consumed with a month of opening since room temperature air causes it to dry and drop its flavor. However, it could stay it in its unopened contained until you are ready to consume it, of course before its best by date.

When kept under a favorable condition and made carefully, homemade sauerkraut lasts for more than one year especially if you place the sealed jar in boiling water. Bu canned sauerkraut has a longer shelf life.

In fact, the inadequate liquid will cause the sauerkraut to dry out and lose its flavor as well as turn the color into brown. If you notice these, it is highly recommended that you throw your fermented cabbage as soon as possible. A few days after the expiration date, you can still use it IF there is no mold development as well as a bad smell. Sauerkraut will have a darkened color since it is exposed to air or it is kept above the saltwater.

But in this case, you can still consume the rest safely by removing the darkened color properly. Another sign that your sauerkraut has gone bad is that its texture becomes weird. If this happens make sure to dispose it quickly.

How can you care for yourself at home? Rest when you feel tired. Be active. Walking is a good choice. For 4 to 6 weeks: Avoid activities that strain your chest or upper arm muscles. Your doctor will tell you if and when you can restart your medicines. He or she will also give you instructions about taking any new medicines. If you take aspirin or some other blood thinner, be sure to talk to your doctor. He or she will tell you if and when to start taking this medicine again.

Make sure that you understand exactly what your doctor wants you to do. Be safe with medicines. Read and follow all instructions on the label. If the doctor gave you a prescription medicine for pain, take it as prescribed.

If you are not taking a prescription pain medicine, ask your doctor if you can take an over-the-counter medicine. Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen Advil, Motrin , naproxen Aleve , or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs unless your doctor says it is okay. After a shower, pat the incision dry. Don't use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol on the incision, which can slow healing. You may cover the area with a gauze bandage if it oozes fluid or rubs against clothing.

Because most of today's pacemakers automatically adjust the heart rate to match the level of physical activity, they may can allow you to resume a more active lifestyle. Your doctor should check your pacemaker every 3 to 6 months. Tell your doctor if you gain weight, if your legs or ankles get puffy, or if you faint or get dizzy. Most pacemakers can be checked by your doctor remotely, which means you don't have to go into the doctor's office. Your pacemaker's battery should last 5 to 15 years. When the battery stops working, you'll need surgery to replace it. The procedure to change your pacemaker's battery is often quicker and requires less recovery time than the procedure to implant your pacemaker.

If you have a pacemaker and become terminally ill with a condition unrelated to your heart, such as cancer, it's possible that your pacemaker could prolong your life. Doctors and researchers vary in their opinions about turning off a pacemaker in end-of-life situations. Talk to your doctor if you have a pacemaker and are concerned about turning it off. You may also want to talk to family members or another person designated to make medical decisions for you about what you'd like to do in end-of-life care situations.

If it's needed to treat a potentially serious condition, such as severe heart block or cardiac arrest, surgery is often performed as an emergency. If the reason for surgery isn't thought to be life threatening, you may have to wait up to 18 weeks.

Your specialist The pacemaker implantation will be carried out by a heart specialist, known as a cardiologist, who will probably have a special interest in pacemakers. Fitting the pacemaker Transvenous implantation is the most common method of fitting a pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator ICD.

Transvenous implantation During transvenous implantation, the cardiologist will make a 5 to 6cm about 2 inch cut just below your collarbone, usually on the left side of the chest, and insert the wires of the pacemaker pacing leads into a vein. The area will soon become numb, but you may feel a pulling sensation during the operation.

You'll usually need to stay in hospital overnight and have a day's rest after the procedure. Epicardial implantation Epicardial implantation is an alternative and less widely used method of fitting a pacemaker. Recovery after epicardial implantation usually takes longer than after transvenous implantation.

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators ICDs In most cases, implantable cardioverter defibrillators ICDs are fitted transvenously, along a vein.

Even with a heavy mist shrouding Mount Index and the falls, we could see the bright green forest contrast against the stark turquoise of the frigid water. We took some time to stop, take the kids off, eat some food, take some pictures, and collect ourselves. But, let me tell you, we really felt the temperature change at that point. It went from 63 degrees at the bottom to 41 at the top, and since we were soaking wet, we started shivering, and we knew it was time to go back down.

Naively, I thought the descent would be easier. It was almost harder, trying to rein in our desire to run, keep the kids from falling, trying to stop ourselves from slipping in the mud, etc. People encouraged us. We made it. Seven and a half hours later, we made it back to the trailhead. With that, I went while it rained the entire time and it got cooler as I went up in elevation. Bring gloves! Even with the rain, the fog was incredibly beautiful as it hid the mountain tops.

It does get quite slick so again proper shoes are a lifesaver. The lake is great although unable to see above the ridge line due to weather. Some snow on the mount side but not on the trail.

Also, only a couple of people honored trail etiquette here hikers descending should give the right of way to ascending hikers and I clocked 8.

Great hike with beautiful view at the lake and lunch rock. A bit longer then we expected - we logged around 10 miles.

Also intense and steep, with very rocky trail. Started at a and there were only a handful of cars there. This hike is pretty technical due to how rocky it is in so many areas. And the stairs are a definite ass buster.

We got to the lake right at and had maybe mins there before the sun went behind the mountain so I suggest starting around if you want more time with the sun. Beautiful day and the falls were cool too. Always fun! There are a few blowdowns over the trail before Bridal Veil, but they're easy to cross.

There were a few larger groups that were pretty loud, but that's more common on this trail I guess Beautiful hike, Bridal Veil falls was stunning. Lots and lots of rocks so the descent is quite tough if you have knee trouble. Lots of stairs and rocks. The stairs are pretty maintained. The rocks are a little challenging due to its various sizes.

We were a little exhausted in the return. Arrived at 7a on Saturday. At the lake, there were about 12 people on lunch rock. Very pleasant. Got lots of tips for other hikes. Trail is well maintained. Two fallen trees to duck under. Many stairs that are in good shape and make the going easier.

Stopped at the falls on the way back. Reached the parking lot at 3p: 70 cars. Trail was in great condition, crisp early fall weekend day Saturday. A few areas of scramble downed tree etc. Bring good boots. We did only the Lake Serene portion and it took us 2 hr 39 minutes, with elevation and 7. Suggest bringing water tabs as one can up water at lake. We even jumped in! Great hike. Headed out from the trail at roughly am on a Saturday morning.

This gave me the whole lake to my self for roughly a half hour before others started to show up. The trail offered a good climb and decent views. The downsides are it appears to be highly trafficked and so hiking later in the day could be less enjoyable.

This might not be great for beginners or children though and could offer safety issues. Overall I really enjoyed it and would visit again once some snow begins to fall. Use Navigator in the AllTrails app and join the other outdoor explorers who have completed this trail. Bridal Veil Falls and Lake Serene hard Length Lake Serene is an alpine lake nestled in the Cascade mountains of Washington State.

Make sure to get an early start in order to get a parking spot at the trailhead. What the trail lacks in length, it makes up for in elevation gain. The first mile and a half winds across a well manicured and slightly inclined path, at the end of which you can choose to go another mile on Bridal Veil Falls Trail to Bridal Veil Falls or another two miles to Lake Serene.

The extra mile is certainly worth the side trip to see the falls. One you have returned to Serene Lake Trail, the two miles to the lake traverse a large climb, through a series of long, wooden steps, rocky passages, and switchbacks. Approximately 1. Once you reach the lake, you will be rewarded by the stunning blue lake surrounded by high ridges and remnants of the previous winter snowfall.

Find a spot along this gorgeous lake to eat lunch and take a rest. From the lake, you can also cross a log bridge and take a short trail that will take you to a large, smooth rock named "Lunch Rock", where you will find people relaxing and jumping into the lake. When you are ready, return via the way you came.

A half-mile spur off the main trail leads up to Bridal Veil Falls. It's well worth the effort, and an easier alternative to climbing the switchbacks to Lake Serene. Note exceptionally large old growth Sitka spruce, Western red cedar and Western hemlock trees past the Bridal Veil Falls junction. Max group size is Pack out all garbage.

Practice Leave No Trace Ethics. Fishing is allowed with a valid WA state fishing license. Contact the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for more information. A free day use or overnight Wilderness Permit must be filled out at the TH and carried for the duration of your trip in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Dogs must be leashed at all times in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Stunning views and quite woods surround this trail, but don't be deceived.

This is a steep hike, and I firmly recommend boots with well fitting ankle support. The Bridal Veil Falls can be reached via the main trail, and once you have ascended the ladder-walkways, it's a fantastic opportunity to rest and relax.

Ascending to Lake Serene requires you to backtrack down the trail, and to then hike back into the mountain pass. Round trip, the hike was 5hrs. Fairly hard hike but the reward at the top is worth the effort. After work on a Thursday, I just did a spontaneous hike. Got at the parking lot around I completed this hike during March, which left me encountering snow towards the top of the hike and surrounding Lake Serene.

But this was just another beautiful sight. Watching snow fall from atop the high rock outcrops, and giving complete peace and quiet. Views from atop are excellent and breathtaking. A great day hike for anybody interested. Would love to go back during the summer.

Because this lake is hidden by the tall peaks surrounding it, it creates a nice blockage from any light pollution. This makes it a great location to view stars! Not much to see during the hike itself, but the Lake itself is incredible and unmatched.

Not for the faint of heart, I'd suggest getting an early start because of crowds and in the winter, well, you know The sun setting at i'm not salty. Hit the falls on the way up, you're not gonna feel like seeing them on the way back, trust me!

Great hike! Challenging, yet doable for your average hiker. Go early on a hot day and take a dip in gorgeous lake serene but the time you reach it you'll appreciate the refresher during hot summer days. We made it to the far side of the lake for easy water across and privacy, but the latter didn't last long.

Go further down the hall, dealing with the last few mercs, and loot another 4, credits from just outside the Shadow Broker's lair. After a lengthy cutscene, you and Liara must deal with the Shadow Broker. Use your standard anti-shield and anti-armor weaponry on him, and run like hell any time he gets close. After the first time you manage to get him down to zero, he'll replenish his own reserves and pull out a portable version of the Collectors' plasma shield.

Infiltrators can just cloak and sneak around to shoot him in the back, while anyone else is going to have to carefully shoot around the shield. Deplete the Shadow Broker's shields and armor, then run up to him and land a melee attack. The third time you punch him in the chops, Liara will end the fight for you.

Your reward for dismantling the Shadow Broker's operation includes 45, credits' worth of Cerberus funding. After the debriefing screen, you'll end up in the Shadow Broker's base, which turns out to be in the Sowilo system; the three closest planets are actually quite rich in minerals, if you feel like doing some scanning on your way back to civilization.

At this point, you can use the various terminals in the Shadow Broker's base for a variety of options. If you feel like gambling, fund various operations throughout the galaxy; while you have a good chance of seeing a solid return on any mission you fund, there's also a chance it'll fail entirely and you'll lose the cash.

You can also read the Broker's dossiers on your teammates, and watch a variety of entertaining surveillance videos of various characters you've run into elsewhere in the game.

Of particular interest: that reporter on the Citadel getting punched out by every alien race that can make a fist. Before you move on, be sure to talk to Liara in the Shadow Broker's base. You can invite her back to the Normandy for a drink, which is worth an achievement. Shepard can also rekindle their relationship with Liara if she was his love interest in Mass Effect 1. But then she will go back to the Shadow Broker's base.

Once again stepping into the role of the heroic Commander Shepard, gamers command their crew on a suicide mission in space. Lair of the Shadow Broker holds up really well -- it's still gorgeous, expertly-plotted and -written with just the right amount of fan service for us Liara fangirls. It is showing its age in some ways, and at times it feels like you're just walking down an endless corridor playing out the same fight different ways.

At least the level design is varied and exciting, unlike Arrival. But it's still the highlight mission throughout the entire game, and works well as an epilogue. I love that they took the most popular romance option and intentionally cordoned her off behind trauma and her own personal vendetta. It's been so long since I played this save that I can't say if my Shep banged Jack or not, but I know for a fact that he did not romance her. The pic was never turned down. I did have Kelly up several times to dance and cuddle and Liara never mentioned this.

I then played a save where I had romanced Miranda. Liara mentioned Ms. Lawson's low cut jump suit and everything else played out exactly the same. No difference, except for that one sentence.

I'm now doing a game where I did not touch Jack or anyone else to see how it goes. Should get to Liara today to find out. I just expected more from Liara depending on if you were faithful or not. Just a minor gripe and doesn't affect my overall score for the fantastic DLC. More and more, I find myself wondering if it's all worth fighting for Chris Redfield. More topics from this board Legendary edition reveals ME2 is the worst of the triology.

How exactly do I keep both Jacks and Mirandas loyalty? Build 5 Answers Aria's cache of goodies? The small "diagonal" box where the back corridor debouches into the next big room is a good starting cover while you survey the room. There will only appear to be one enemy at first, but as soon as you engage the rest will arrive. Advance slowly, and only after eliminating some enemies, as many more will spawn suddenly as you approach the other end of the corridor.

The Engineers have Combat Drones and the Agents have Flashbang Grenades , so be prepared to shift cover locations when necessary. You may find it safer to hide among the cubicles and desks on the right side of this corridor, since it exposes you to fewer enemies at a time and allows you to pick some off individually.

Combat Strategy: Keep your squadmates in cover back down the hallway from the small diagonal box the start of this portion of the section. Have Shepard take cover back from the box so that the mercs can't hit Shepard. The shadow broker mercs will look like they are going to flank you to the right in the cubicle area but they won't. Peek out into the room and take down the mercs using weapons and powers. As you eliminate the mercs, have Shepard run out into the room to trigger the remaining waves of mercs and then run back to the cover area.

Watch out for the combat drone that the Engineer spawns often. Just run back down the starting hallway, the combat drone will follow Shepard, and your squadmates will take it down.

No need to waste ammo. Also, on a purely aesthetic note, there is quite a nice display of planetary mining locations in the room with the cubicles -- if you played the original Mass Effect you will have Mako flashbacks. Shepard radios Vasir about it and she says to find a switch to active the fire suppression systems.

Vasir mentions that she is on her way down, so move up to meet her. Tip: The fire suppression room is a good location to save your game for the upcoming sections. On the upper level, be prepared for more combat with three more Agents. Use the limited cover to take them out, and have your squadmates flank, then head into the room they were guarding. Open the door to continue. Combat Strategy: Keep your squadmates in cover at the bottom of the stairway and have Shepard peek around the corner up the stairs at the three Agents once they spawn.

The Agents will not come down the stairs and can easily be eliminated by chipping away at them from down the stairway. Watch out for the Flashbang Grenades that the Agents throw and just go down to the bottom of the stairs anytime Shepard needs to recharge shields. Tela Vasir then shoots the Agent, who falls dead when Shepard and the squad enter. Attempt to defuse the situation, but Liara will mention that Vasir tried to kill her.

Shepard and the squad pull their guns, and Liara tells the story about how Vasir signaled the Shadow Broker's Agents and broke into Liara's apartment. Vasir then killed Sekat and took his data, which she probably still has on her.

However, Liara throws up a barrier to protect the squad and Vasir makes a run for it. Shepard tackles her, and then they fly out the window. Vasir cushions their fall with her biotics and has a small scuffle with Shepard. Then Liara leaps out of the office, also using her biotics to cushion her fall while the squad watches.

Vasir, now outnumbered, makes a run for it. Liara follows closely behind, blowing past two Shadow Broker Agents in the process. The squad rejoins Shepard in the plaza where more Agents emerge from the Eldfell-Ashland Energy office, allowing Vasir to escape.

Deal with the guards and continue pursuing Vasir. Take out the Agents with haste. There are two Agents and a Heavy to deal with initially, so keep to cover. When they fall, more Agents and a Vanguard emerge, so use the fountain in the center for cover.

It not only provides effective cover, but allows for a wide field of fire. Indeed, if it happens to be useful for your tactics, you're actually allowed to get into the fountain. When they all fall, the benefit of leaving the power cells alone earlier will become apparent -- make a quick trip up the central stairs to retrieve them, and the ammo of all your weapons will be replenished.

Now head downstairs and into the atrium. Inside, grab the cover provided by the bench to your left -- resist the tempting large circular column straight in front of you, as its shape makes for more difficult aiming and you aren't allowed to slide smoothly back and forth around the pole.

Take down the ten or so Agents, the Heavies, and the Engineers that try to stop you the mix appears to vary somewhat by difficulty setting. They will keep coming from the door in waves, so stick to cover and target them as they walk in. Overload can be used to instantly destroy the Combat Drones that the Engineers produce, and it's a good idea because getting dislodged from cover by a drone with this many enemies nearby can produce deadly results. Tip: You can prevent most waves of enemies from spawning by getting to the far corner of the room where the Heavy is.

This is most easily done by an Engineer, who need only send the Combat Drone to that side of the room. Vanguards can charge over, Infiltrators can sneak over, etc. Combat Strategy: This entire battle can be completed without straying into the room to be overwhelmed by the shadow broker mercs.

Place Shepard on the second set of stairs looking out into the large room. Have Shepard walk down the stairs to flush out the first of many mercs in this area.

Use weapons and powers to chip away at the mercs and the mercs will stay stuck in cover. Watch out for the Flashbang Grenades that the Agents throw and just walk backwards up the stairs anytime Shepard needs to recharge shields.

Walk back down the stairs and chip away at the mercs in the room until they begin to fall. As you kill a merc, another will spawn out of the doorway to replace the dead merc. Watch out for the Engineers as they will spawn Combat Drones. When this happens, have Shepard go back up the staircase past your squadmates and have them take the drone down to conserve ammo.

Sometimes the mercs will stay in cover that will require Shepard to move out into the room to take them down. Watch out for the Shadow Broker Heavy in the back left corner!

The Heavy will stay stuck in cover and will not move out of cover until Shepard goes out into the room after the Heavy.

When the mercs are all finally down, gather up ammo and head out the door to find Liara and Vasir engaged in a firefight. Tip: Save before you enter the door as you will be unable to save until after the sky way chase.

Vasir calls her X3M and then jumps into it. Liara then grabs a taxi, followed by Shepard. You can only select one squad member to come with, but remember that Liara is a biotic so pick carefully. On the other hand a squadmate with Warp to detonate Liara's Singularity is quite handy. Since Miranda has both Warp to combo with Liara and Overload to take down shields, she makes an excellent pairing. Other notable strategies include Thane who combines Warp combo powers with Shredder Ammo for all the upcoming organic enemies, and the easily-forgotten Morinth whose Dominate can run all the organics in circles attacking each other.

Keep following Vasir through the skies, and watch out for the traffic, and every other obstacle. Just keep in mind that boosting reduces the amount of control you have.

If you lose Vasir, the chase will restart. Your boost is more effective if you use it in bursts, especially right after changing directions, rather than simply holding it down.

Liara will be commenting the whole time, which Shepard usually replies to, and the conversations are usually funny. Sometimes, however, her conversations help with direction. After a period of time, Vasir will start dropping proximity bombs, so avoid them, lest you lose speed. Tip: You do not have to repeat the entire sky way chase if you fail right at the end.

Once you get far enough into the chase, if you fail, you will respawn in the middle of the chase. Keep following Vasir and try to avoid a head on collision. Eventually, you are treated to a cutscene where Vasir tries to ram Shepard and the squad out of sky, while dodging traffic, but only succeeds in colliding with another skycar, and damaging hers.

Shepard and the squad see the crash and land their intact cab on the top of the building to pursue Vasir, who radios for backup. You now have Liara as a squad member. She is armed with Heavy Pistols and Submachine Guns.

Save your game before you move! This is very important as the upcoming battle can go wrong very fast and you will have to redistribute Liara's squad points all over again. It also instantly destroys the flying drones you will encounter from time to time, and of course it has its traditional ability to simplify a combat by temporarily removing a flanking enemy, with the added bonus that the enemy falls down at the end of the stasis.

For these reasons fully upgrading Liara's Stasis with the Enhanced Stasis evolution is strongly recommended, particularly on higher difficulty levels. Squadmate Powers Tip: Fully max out Asari Scientist and split your points up to get as much Stasis and Warp you can and don't waste any extra points on Singularity. The upcoming Shadow Broker Base mission will require quickly killing Vanguards at close range and a nasty section with multiple rocket drones at once.

You can't redistribute Liara's points once you've selected them and while the upcoming rooftop battle isn't fun, the Shadow Broker Base multiple wave battle is much worse and you want your points spent correctly for that battle. Head up the stairs only to be ambushed by three to five waves of Shadow Broker Agents and Engineers. The first wave will be to your front, the second and third off to either the left or right on the upper platform, or behind you on the lower platform, so plan your cover appropriately.

However, the subsequent waves will not appear until the previous one has been eliminated. On higher difficulties, the next wave flies in after a squad has been reduced to one member, so move quickly and eliminate the enemy before you are flanked by the new arrivals.

Combat Strategy: Be aware that the instant you move the first wave of mercs will show up so you need to get to cover quickly. Ignore the med-kit for now unless you aren't full already also don't be stingy with Medi-gel during this fight as you will have plenty of refills afterwards.

There is a left stairway, a middle stairway, and a right stairway in this area. An optimal spot to fight this battle from is in between the two parked vehicles just to the right of the middle stairway. Once you get there and are facing away from the edge of the building, to your left will be a large van that is fairly tall for cover which is excellent, and to your right will be a red skycar.

Place your squadmates in the corners where the fronts of the vehicles meet the high wall in front of you, and remember that you might need to "remind" them to stay there after each wave. You will be almost totally safe from enemy fire here as the enemies you face generally won't try to rush you and instead congregate on the raised area up the stairs above you.

Shepard can hug the wall or get in the corner against the van and the wall to be totally out of the line of fire in order to recharge shields. The first wave of mercs will drop while you are moving to cover and will run to the elevated cover above you. The mercs can be hard to hit as they go to cover often and run back and forth but they can be chipped away at slowly and safely from your "safe zone" with weapons and powers.

Keep an eye on your ammo, but don't worry if you start to get low, you'll be able to fill up once this fight is over. Also keep in mind that enemy Engineers can recharge their shields periodically so make sure you kill them outright or at least do damage to their health bars before they have a chance to do this.

There are two major threats in this cover position: one is the Combat Drones that the Engineers will spawn there is one Engineer with each wave , and the second is the chance that a wave of enemies will land right on the ledge near the exposed rear of your cover position where each enemy wave after the first touches down is random and you could get unlucky.

If this happens, don't panic.

Fashion forward: 4 Star. Overall: 4 Star. When growing your hair out, you will need to have the hair trimmed, around every 8 to 10 weeks, to keep it in good condition. Keep the hair one length all over.

Scissor cut. Growing your hair out to this length will take some time, but if you have the patience, it will look great at the end result. This style is best suited for guys with thick hair. You need to keep it well-conditioned; use a high-quality conditioner after you shampoo, and try a weekly hair mask. Keep the hair off the face by sweeping it back and behind the ears. To add volume, try a hair mousse in damp hair before blow-drying.

You can also use a sea salt spray to work in texture. Recommended Products To Use CaleBlas says:. To style your hair like Jake's, you need a smoothing product.

Smooth around a 2p-sized dollop through all of your hair while it's damp. Then dry your hair using your hair dryer and a Denman brush. Note: you're trying to smooth it out and not create volume.

Do this by using the hair flow in order to keep the hair close to the head and flatten it down. Create a parting on whichever side your hair falls and, once again, use the brush to push over and back. Once your hair is fully dry, you need a product that will give you some hold and weight without looking too overloaded this is definitely what Jake is going for.

The perfect answer? This one is a little shorter and tighter so it will probably notice more as it grows out, so you may be visiting your barber a little sooner if you want to keep it fresh.

Jake Gyllenhaal's haircut in Love and Drugs suits his character perfectly. It's a blend of smart and suave with added texture for a care free look at the same time. We'd call this a medium length soft textured quiff.

Nothing too overly quiffed or pomped, just a subtle quiff with plenty of texture added through. The sides look to have been cut using scissor over comb or clipper over comb to give a more personalised finish, but you could go down to around a on the back and sides.

You don't want anything too short or harsh for this look. Styling this Jake Gyllenhaal haircut: This style is going to be all about the blow dryer and pre-styling to get the blown back look he has. Use a pre-styler like a salt spray in damp hair and then finish with a low shine product like the Regal Gentleman Texture Paste coming soon.

You want a product that adds texture and gives a strong hold. Sometimes in the movie it's also worn with a more slicked look, so if you want to replicate this use a medium to high shine pomade instead.
